Inside, the room smelled of dust, polish and something colder, like coins held too long
in the palm. Cabinets stood against the walls in solemn rows. Their curved glass fronts
caught the ceiling light and bent it into cloudy moons. On the nearest shelf, porcelain
birds stared from their painted branches, each beak open in a song that had never
made a sound.

Elias stepped further in. His keys tapped against his hip, too loud in the padded hush.
