For a while she listened for voices. She held her breath so hard her ribs hurt, waiting for one shout,
one whistle, one ordinary human sound. Nothing came. The rain kept falling in fine, slanted threads,
stitching the valley to the sky. Mist gathered in the hollow below, pale and patient, like something
waiting for her to stop trying.
Her bag had landed a few metres away, hooked on a blackthorn bush. She dragged herself towards it,
using her elbows. Each movement sent sparks up her leg. The thorns scratched at her sleeve and
caught in her hair, but she pulled until the strap slid free.
